Cologne IMMEDIATE WORKSHOP: Ideas, Projects, Work In Progress.

Sunday, 07.09.2008 to Saturday, 13.09.2008 in Cologne

Starting point: the relation between human and machine – matters of contrast, influence, interaction, concurrence, domination, symbiosis and illness. Human motion (dance) interacting with light and sound and visual media. Creation of immersive structures and abstract environments.

WORKSHOP STAGE upstairs:

On the floor lies a grey fabric of approximately 10m x 5 m, on which stand 3 x 6 transparent LED steles, forming a grid: the workshop’s stage.

At the long end of the stage, members from CIANT have positioned tables for their computer stations. Opposite of them at the stage’s other end two major video screens have been placed for visualisation, testing of programming and internal network connection. Two projectors are casting pictures on a side wall that is opposite to the working places of M2F team members Quentin and Romain, as well as of CIANT director Pavel Smetana and the photographer Vera Batoszka.

Gamerz 04
Multimédia international festival,
8th january > 6th february 2009  - Aix-en-Provence. -

What is going on when video games turn to be a medium that allowed artists to create? When artists invest fields such as virtual universes, or network? When contemporary art meets entertaining  and freaking universes?

Back from Istanbul and for the fourth time, the international events GAMERZ spreads over the city of Aix-en-Provence, taking over three locations of contemporary art.
From the very beginning of the year 2009, a real cultural tour emulates the city during a month, inviting the public to discover the new creation through a series of exhibitions, meetings, and performances.

Far from a simple festival, GAMERZ deploys a deep work over artistic creations and new interventions around creative processes.

Realized in cooperation with Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey, Austria, England, and in collaboration with Second Nature association, M2F Créations is undertaking a real inter-cultural exchange and proposes an intense rendez-vous with contemporary arts in the region of P.A.C.A.

Immediate Workshop :
Motion tracking is a system that detects the movement of the performer by devices, sensors and uses the data comes from the performer’s movement to control the stage elements; light, music, image...
There are two ways of doing it: The first is «environment-oriented» in which the stage itself is sensitive to motion: Video cameras and other «external» spatial measuring devices (such as infrared or sonar).
The second is «body-oriented» where electrodes or other devices attached to the body measure physiological artifacts of movement: Body-worn electrodes and other physiological measuring devices.
In these workshops, Motion Tracking system will be descibed and the prototype performances will be created.

Istanbul public presentation - GOLEM - Monday 10 November.
Amber08 Festival

Talimhane Theater
Golem -work in progress presentation- (2008)

GOLEM creation is an international co-production performance in the field of technological art with a strong emphasis on "future prototyping and fabrication of life". It brings together practitioners from areas of visual arts, performing arts, sound art, dance, robotics, computer science, biology, biotechnology, genetics, artificial life, artificial intelligence, and philosophy in order to realize a performance to be presented and toured in several European countries.

Very old prague legend has it that Rabbi Loew's Adam, better known under the name of Golem, was made out of clay. Subsequently, he was brought to life by the inscription in Hebrew of the ineffable name of God. In our day, the Golem synthesises both fantastical functions and the perspective of a prototypical future.

Ljubljana Workshop PDF Print

WORKSHOP, May 1 – 3,  2008 (LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA)

In the context of Ljubljana workshop, Zavod Projekt Atol organized a 3 day workshop, associated with the new performance of the Slovene choreographer Maja Delak SERATA ARTISTICA GIOVANILE co-production with Emanat, a cultural NGO active in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and established by Maja Delak. We had 9 foreign guest participants from partner organizations (in the frame of IMMEDIATE project) - CIANT from Prague (Czech Republic) and AMBER from Istanbul (Turkey).

Luka Prinčič:

»The workshop focused on an experimental process (ad-hoc combining of an almost completely developed dance piece and real-time motion tracking system) included creation of software interface that connected motion of the dancer and sound - generated through granular synthesis. Instead of using all 11 tracking points of the body with their 6 values (x,y,z - location + a,e,r - rotation) each, we used only four tracking points with only location values to control the 'start location' of a granulated sound sample for each point. By experimenting with couple of dancers we recorded the resulting ongoing sound. With such methodology an original phrasing of sound, a particular musical structures in time appeared. We then selected certain fragments from these recordings and used them in the final dance piece.«

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE SERATA ARTISTICA GIOVANILE

Premiere: May 7th at 8.30 pm / Cankarjev dom, Linhart hall, Ljubljana

Rerun: May 15th at 8.30 pm / Cankarjev dom, Linhart Hall, Ljubljana (IETM meeting - Off program)

The starting points of the new performance Serata artistica giovanile by choreographer Maja Delak are expressionist piano compositions, full of fragments and complex dynamics, entitled Bagatelles, by Slovene composer Marij Kogoj (1892-1956). Besides Kogoj, the performance is informed by another avantgarde creator, the theatre director Ferdo Delak (1905-1968) and his project Serata artistica giovanile, which he understood as »the chorographical sketch of a life on stage«.

Bratislava Workshop PDF Print

Sunday 27th April

Starting day of the workshop.

The workshop was initially meant to start already on Saturday, but there was a concert in the A4 zero space, the hosting hall for the workshop. So we decided it will be better to start on Sunday. Quentin, Silvain, Roman and Boris had flight reservations so they were in Bratislava since Saturday evening. On Sunday morning we met in A4 also with Petra and later her whole family J and we went for a nice coffee in a place situated in the pedestrian zone. In this lovely sunny surroundings we were waiting for the arrival of the Czech team and meanwhile discussing our current projects and our preferences how to continue with the IMMEDIATE workshop. The Prague team finally successfully arrived, after arranging of accommodation and all other necessary technical things the technicians started to unpack the system. Vit from A4 also helped a lot, he was assisting with setting up of everything. But after midnight we just felt exhausted so we decided to stop Pavel who was climbing ladders with unfinishing energy and finally decided to have something to eat/ sleep. Ekmel just arrived to the hotel so he joined us right in the front of A4. Bratislava is a nice city but to have a nice hot meal after 10 pm was a problem again.

Monday 28th April

Preparation day.

Zuzana had to go to her university, Petra was not needed yet, so the boys stayed in A4 on their own the whole morning. Pavel, Stephane, Ivor, Tomáš, Michal, Ekmel, Quentin, Silvain, Roman and Boris were installing motion capture and testing other things. Pavel went to buy some other needed equipment too. At 6 pm the IMMEDIATE workshop had to move from the stage because the Skrat theatre started to prepare the installation of the theatre scene. A4 is the only place for this kind of experimental art in the centre of Bratislava and since last year it’s full of events. It’s very good that so many things are happening but it’s also complicated to fit in the busy schedule. But we were trying the best with help of the A4 technical staff. After the theatre performance and a good dinner the group went back to work.

The virtual reality community, in different ways, has already explored using motion capture technologies as an device tool to control and drive avatars in virtual environments for many years. Methodologies are still in development and always need to be indeed re adjusted to newest technologies, platforms, ways of expression and uses, interacting with the avatar by driving his gestures is still a usual form of use.
Related research in this ways has created methodologies for controlling an avatar, working on its body expression, materials, morphology and possibly on very different proportions and features. Focused research in past works has lead and made interests in controlling an actor rather than an actor controlling the virtual scene.
